Over 250 representatives from education, business and local authority across Doncaster gathered at the launch of Opportunities Doncaster and Start Doncaster at the Hilton Garden Inn on 16 July.

Mayor Ros Jones, Doncaster Council CEO Damian Allen and Andy Hibbitt, Director of Opportunities Doncaster and Skills & Education Director at Doncaster Chamber, emphasised the critical role that partnerships have played in the success of the launch.

Opportunities Doncaster is co-created by Doncaster Chamber and Doncaster Council to offer students “cradle to career” support through building partnerships between schools and businesses that will raise young people’s awareness and aspirations to pursue the different careers and education pathways available to them, and to gain the soft skills they need to be work-ready.

But partnerships between education, business and local government won’t be enough to make sustainable change. Representation from young people is critical. Alannah White, member of the Youth Parliament for Doncaster, said: “We need to make sure [young people] have a voice in the conversation.”

Andy Hibbitt said: “Opportunities Doncaster will be a central point of support for educators, employers and young people. We will ensure that employers are equipped with the tools they need to develop their talent pipelines, and, as importantly, we will engage with young people across the borough to better understand their need for career information and guidance. Young people will not only have a voice in the conversation but will play a role in decision-making. We want to empower them to shape the services provided.”

“Lasting partnerships between business and schools will be paramount for the ongoing success of Opportunities Doncaster so we can continue to show young people the breadth of opportunities that are available across the borough. These include apprenticeships and work placements, which offer a stepping stone into career paths ranging from zoo-keeping to air traffic control.”

Doncaster is becoming well-known for delivering enhanced value through collaboration. Opportunities Doncaster harnesses the power of partnerships, working with education providers and business in a practical way to deliver genuine value for both young people and employers in the borough.

With the launch event over, the focus has shifted to Opportunities Doncaster LIVE. Taking place in February 2020, the interactive event enables employers and education providers to engage with over 3,000 young people to inform and inspire them about the variety of career pathways available to them in Doncaster.
